Amazon Prime Video has officially found its lead for the highly anticipated live action adaptation of God of War. Ryan Hurst, a familiar face to both television drama fans and gaming enthusiasts, has been tapped to portray the iconic protagonist, Kratos. This casting serves as a fascinating homecoming for Hurst, who previously lent his voice and performance to the character’s rival, Thor, in the critically acclaimed video game God of War: Ragnarok.

The series will explore the complex depths of a character who is a Spartan by his upbringing but a god by his very nature. The lore of Kratos is steeped in tragedy; he was a commander who famously bartered his soul to Ares, the Greek God of War, to secure a battlefield victory, a move that cost him his humanity.

A Journey of Gods and Men

The television adaptation is set to follow the narrative arc established in the two most recent entries of the gaming franchise. The story centers on an aging Kratos as he navigates the snowy, mythological wilds of the North while raising his ten year old son, Atreus. Following the death of his wife, Faye, Kratos and Atreus must embark on a perilous quest to scatter her remains from the highest peak in the realms.

This journey is as much about emotional growth as it is about survival. While Kratos struggles to prepare his son for the harsh realities of being a god, Atreus acts as a mirror, helping his father rediscover what it means to be human.

The Man Behind the Blades

Ryan Hurst brings a wealth of experience in playing rugged, complex characters to this role. He is perhaps best known for his heartbreaking performance as Opie Winston in the long running FX series Sons of Anarchy. He also left a significant mark on the horror genre as the formidable villain Beta in The Walking Dead.

Beyond his television work, Hurst has appeared in several high profile films, including Remember the Titans and Saving Private Ryan. His upcoming slate remains prestigious, as he is scheduled to appear in Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey. Hurst is currently represented by UTA and Piper Kaniecki Marks Management.

Behind the Scenes of the Adaptation

The road to production for God of War has seen its share of changes since Amazon first greenlit the project in 2022. Following a creative overhaul in late 2024 that saw the departure of the original showrunner, Ronald D. Moore has taken over the steering wheel. Moore, a veteran of the industry known for his work on Outlander and Battlestar Galactica, will serve as the writer and showrunner.

The production is a massive joint venture between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions. Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes. The executive producing team is packed with talent, including the game’s creative visionary Cory Barlog, along with Maril Davis, Naren Shankar, and Asad Qizilbash. With a new creative lead and a powerhouse actor at the center, the series is moving full steam ahead into its production phase.
